Have them on both my bikes. Easy to install and setup. Excellent modulation and cheap.

Shimano XT Hydraulic Brakes

by James
(Colorado)

I am considering buying a mountain bike that has Shimano XT hydraulic brakes. I have heard that these types of brakes do not do well in cold weather conditions. Has anyone had experience with these types of brakes? If so, do you recommend them?

BB5 and Elixir 3

by Alan
(Toronto)

BB5s are a pain to adjust -- only one pad can be dialed and it's unclear how to adjust the other one. Also the BB5s literally froze up when the temp dropped below 0c/32f. The Elixir worked fine. It had previously been raining so perhaps there was a drop of water in the housing but, one way or another, I had no rear brake until things thawed out.

I now have Elixirs on front and rear and am very impressed with the reliable stopping power.
