Cross Country Mountain Bikes: Information and Tips

Cross country mountain bikes, or xc mountain bikes, are built for general trail riding purposes. They are lighter than mountain bikes in the all mountain, downhill, and freeride categories, but cannot tackle extreme technical terrain, like big drops or jumps. Cross country mountain bikes are the most efficient type of full suspension bike for pedaling uphill. They are a good choice for epic rides or cross country racing.

Choosing a Cross Country Mountain Bike

In order to choose a mountain bike, it is important to consider the type of riding you are planning on doing. If you are planning to do long trail rides and want a lighter mountain bike that is good for climbing or all day riding or if you are considering mountain bike racing or marathon riding, a cross country mountain bike is a good choice. If you want to fly down technical downhills, do big jumps and drops, or ride the bike parks, you may wish to consider an all mountain, freeride, or downhill mountain bike.

Most mountain bike companies divide xc mountain bikes into two categories. Race XC and Trail XC.

Race XC Mountain Bikes

Race XC bikes are built for speed, nimble handling, and quick acceleration. This type of xc mountain bike is a great choice if you want a fast bike that is great for climbing or if you are considering mountain bike racing.

Race xc mountain bikes have lightweight frames, which are often either aluminum alloy or carbon fiber. Their components are also lightweight and efficient.

Race XC bikes usually have around 100 mm of suspension. A Race XC mountain bike can either be in the full suspension or hardtail category, meaning it may either only have both front and rear suspension or it may only have suspension in the front. Some mountain bike brands offer 29er xc race mountain bikes, either in the full suspension or hardtail category.

Trail XC Mountain Bikes

Trail xc bikes are slightly more burly than race xc bikes. They are full suspension mountain bikes that are built for long trail rides or marathons. If you are looking for a mountain bike that you can take out on the trail all day and tackle moderate terrain, a trail xc bike is a good choice.

Trail xc mountain bikes are a little heavier then race xc bikes, but lighter than all mountain, freeride, or downhill mountain bikes. Trail xc bikes usually have around 120 mm of suspension. Their frames and components are heavier, but more durable than race xc mountain bikes so they are not as efficient and speedy, but they can handle more technical terrain.
